Alphonso Jackson has at least one reason to want to go into work each morning, however small it may be. At least he can get calls on his cell phone. The Bridgeport resident says he never has problems while driving around Fairfield for the Fairfield Cab Co. Thats something he cant say about his own home in Bridgeport.
I get a call, and start talking, and it goes dead, Alphonso says. It only seems to happen when Im in Bridgeport, not when Im in Fairfield. It must be a dead zone.
Alphonso is not alone. Elliott Hankin, another Bridgeport resident who spends a lot of time in Fairfield, also says his AT&T service is great around town. Though he admits to finding small dead spots here and there, in general he finds it better than in other towns up the coast.
Ive never had a problem in Fairfield, Elliott says. I mean, any more than anywhere else.
One reason people in Fairfield might have better luck with cell phone reception is the number of antennas throughout town. According to the Connecticut Siting Council, which governs where companies can place towers in the state, Fairfield has antennas in 10 locations.
(For the curious, most towers are in clusters along the Merritt Parkway along Woodhouse Road and Congress Street. And a tower atop the Fairfield Police Headquarters services most of downtown.)
In comparison, neighboring Westport has antennas in only six spots. Easton packs its towers into three locations. Bridgeport also has antennas in 10 distinct spots, but those antennas serve a population of more than double Fairfields about 138,000 to 57,312.
Still, not everyones happy with service across Fairfield. Ed Daly says he doesnt think hes ever seen all five bars light up on his iPhone in Fairfield, not even at his house near Lake Mohegan. And, he says he finds dead spots when heading toward the Easton border.
But when it comes to his phone service, Ed doesnt complain. In the downtown area, he can at least make a phone call. But when it comes to using his Smartphone for anything else, thats a different story.
When Im on Wifi, its fantastic, Ed said about accessing the Internet on his phone. But it gets to the point where I cant even use it without Wi-Fi.
