FAIRFIELD, Conn. The Fairfield Fire Department added five new faces this week, while saying goodbye to one of its former leaders.
Jordan Charney, Scott Iannucci, Thomas Keneally, Jason Salvato and Francis Zwierlein III were sworn in as the towns newest firefighters before family, friends and their new colleagues at Sullivan Independence Hall. Former Fire Commission Anthony Jannotta was honored for his decade of service.
The five 20-somethings first interviewed for their jobs nearly a year ago. After 12 months of the Fairfield Fire Departments application process and training, they were sworn in by Town Clerk Betsy Browne at the Fire Commissions monthly meeting on Thursday.
Their badges were then pinned on by their parents or a company officer. [Its] a traditional rite of passage into public service as a first responder, wrote Asst. Chief Christ Tracy in a press release.
The five new firefighters will begin work immediately. In fact, one of the group changed out of his dress uniform and into his fireproof attire immediately after the ceremony finished. He then hopped onto an engine to take him to his evening shift at Fire Station No. 2 on Jennings Road.
The Fire Commission also Thursday thanked former member and chair Anthony Jannotta. Currently a legal counsel to Gov. Dannel Malloy, Jannotta finished his second five-year term in 2011. He and his family also run the the Jannotta Family Feed, which collects funds for the Connecticut Food Bank each Thanksgiving weekend.
After the ceremony, he assured Fire Chief Richard Felner and firefighters union president Bob Smith that hed still be around if they need anything in the future.
It was an honor and a privilege to serve on the Fairfield fire commission for 10 years, Jannotta said. We are truly blessed to have such dedicated individuals committed to our public safety.
