FAIRIFIELD, Conn. Fairfield Warde senior Harry Warrnick has had some splendid races during his career. Mondays victory in the 3,200 meters at the State Open, however, might have been one of his best.
Warnick won the race in 9:12.72, a drop of nearly 14 seconds from his previous best time in the event this spring. Warnick ran 9:26.14 when he won the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference championship May 22. Fairfield Preps Connor Rog took second in 9:18.87.
Warnicks victory gave the FCIAC top honors in three distance running events. Staples junior Henry Wynne won the 800 and 1,600. Warnicks time from Mondays victory is ranked 10th in the New York, New Jersey and Connecticut region by a national track website.
Fairfield Preps 4 x 800 relay had another close second. They ran 7:56.45 to finish behind Simsbury, which ran 7:51.3. In the 800, Fairfield Ludlowes Jack White finished third in 1:55.06.
Preps Adam Vare, a junior, finished fifth in the 800, and Christian Alvarado was sixth in the 1,600.
In the girls' races, Warde freshman Lia Joham ran 58.09 to finish fifth in the 400. That was her fastest time of the season. Cate Allen finished sixth in the 1,600, running 5:04.05. That beat her seeded time by more than eight seconds.
