Fairfield Warde, Penfield Upgrades Get Final OK

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Fairfield Warde High School will get its new roof, Riverfield School’s Building Committee will begin their work and Penfield Pavilion will get its new parking lot, sidewalks and flood protection after the Fairfield Representative Town Meeting gave its unanimous approval to all three projects Monday night.

The Fairfield Warde project will use up to $11 million to repair the high school’s roof during the next four summers. The roofs, which date to 1991, have seen as many as 159 leaks patched the last few years. Once finished, the district expects the new roof to last at least 30 years without major problems.

As for Riverfield, the elementary school’s expansion still is in the early stages. The Board of Selectmen formed a building committee for the project earlier this month and appointed its first seven members. The RTM signed off on all seven at their meeting Monday.

The seven committee members will now begin planning work. Their charge is to add five classrooms to the crowded school. The project also will expand special education space and the all-purpose room at the school, and improve access for the disabled and indoor air quality. The Riverfield Building Committee hopes to have formal plans and a price tag by spring 2013.

Outside of Fairfield’s schools, the RTM also gave its consent to the Department of Public Works’ proposed work at Penfield Pavilion this spring. Public Works Director Richard White plans to put in a new parking lot at the pavilion, along with a new sidewalk leading up to the area along Fairfield Beach Road.

White also plans to use state grant money to install a bulkhead along Penfield Beach, to ease flooding problems in beach area neighborhoods. With the RTM’s approval Monday night, White’s department can begin work this spring with the goal of finishing by summer.
