FAIRFIELD, Conn. Fairfield Wardes girls basketball suffered a disappointing setback Friday when its six-game winning streak was snapped by Trinity Catholic. The Mustangs still have time to recover, however, beginning with Tuesdays game against Bridgeport Central.
Warde (10-6 overall, 8-6 in the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference) is currently among three teams tied for ninth in the race for the league playoffs. The top eight teams make the tournament.
Norwalk, Stamford and Staples are one game ahead of the Mustangs. Darien and Westhill are also 8-6 in the league.
Warde has a favorable schedule this week, with games against Bridgeport Central and Ridgefield, both with sub .500 records. The key games for Warde could be next week, when it meets Darien on Monday and Stamford on Wednesday. Warde also plays three of the games at home, where it is 7-0 this season.
Until the Trinity game, the Mustangs had been playing terrific defense. Only undefeated Danbury had scored more than 60 points against Warde in its last 10 games, during which the Mustangs went 9-1.
