FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Fairfield Warde High School was declared safe after a minor spill in a chemistry lab Friday morning. No students or teachers were harmed in the incident.
A class of four students and a teacher spilled a mixture of potassium chloride, sodium chloride, sodium iodide and benzoic acid during a lesson, according to Fairfield Fire Department reports. Officials were called a few hours later because of concerns that the chemicals might have caused an unsafe reaction.
The teacher and students were checked by paramedics and advised to call their doctors later, but they were not hospitalized. The school did not need to be evacuated, but the classroom was left empty and ventilated until it had been inspected.
Inspectors found no signs of contamination, according to official reports. Fairfield Health Director Sands Cleary and the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection declared the classroom safe at about 1 p.m. Friday.
