Fairfield Voters Trickle In

Terrence and Mary Donahue take advantage of every opportunity to vote and have their voices heard. For them, a primary is an important way to affect political outcomes. But according to election officials, few others were taking the opportunity to have their say, at least early on. By 11 a.m. only around 120 had voted at Fairfield Ludlowe High School, the District 9 polling center.

Joseph Leary, an election official, said the turnout was low, but could change at any moment.

Fran Levin, who said she votes for both parties but would not specify her party affiliation, called the campaigns "too nasty." She said a lot of people are disappointed in the current leadership and that the November election could go the Republicans' way.

Mary Donahue called the primary season "too long," with "too many calls" to her house from candidates.

Polls close at 8 p.m. There are no local contests on the ballot, but several on the state and federal level. Republicans will pick candidates for governor, lieutenant governor and attorney general as well as U.S. Representative for the 4th District and the U.S. Senate. Democrats are voting on a gubernatorial candidate, as well as secretary of the state, lieutenant governor and comptroller.
