Fairfield U. Awards Frager New Contract

Fairfield University women's basketball head coach Joe Frager has been signed to a contract extension that will take him up to the 2015-16 season with the Stags. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. The deal comes just weeks after men's basketball coach Ed Cooley was signed to a seven-year extension that was the largest money-wise in Fairfield history.

With a 60-36 record and a trip to the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) championship game this season, has proved himself deserving of the contract, after taking over for legend Dianne Nolan (over 500 victories and 20 plus years as coach), three seasons ago.

“As I left campus after my initial interview three years ago I knew that I wanted to become a part of the Fairfield University family,” said Frager, who won the Division II National Championship with Southern Connecticut four years ago. “It has been an honor and pleasure to lead the Fairfield women’s basketball program the last three years and I am excited to continue in that role. I relish the opportunity to continue to build this program to a perennial contender for the MAAC title and postseason play.”

Athletic Director Gene Doris praised Frager, saying: “He has made great strides in restoring the legacy of our women’s basketball program and has it well on the way to writing new chapters in that story. This contract extension rewards the success and progress of the past three seasons and reaffirms the commitment of Fairfield University to Joe, his family, and the program.”

The Stags defeated Towson at Alumni Hall this season in the Women’s Basketball Invitational for the first women’s national postseason tournament victory in school history.

Fairfield will lose senior forwards Stephanie Geehan (a 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds player), and Tara Flaherty. But guard Sarah Paulus, sister of Duke standout Greg Paulus, will return from a season-long injury, Desiree Pina (12.1 points per game) and Katelyn Linney (10.2 points per game) will also return.
