Sage Juliusberger simply loves to read. In fact, the Fairfield Warde High School freshman spends so much time in the Fairfield Public Library, she decided she should help the librarians out a bit. So Saturday afternoon she stopped by for her first-ever Service Saturday, stocking shelves for the day.
I like it a lot, Sage says. I just learned about the Dewey Decimal System, so now I get to put it into use.
On the first month of every Saturday throughout the school year, the Fairfield Public Library asks for volunteers to help with odd jobs around the library. Teen librarian Nicole Scherer, who coordinates the troops, says about 15-20 kids stop by each month to help out. Then in the summer, kids can stop by every week if they like.
The kids task range from restocking shelves to dusting when, as Nicole says, shes feeling particularly cruel. She added that the kids are a valuable help with small jobs like shelf reading, where the kids scan the shelves to make sure books are still in order.
A lot of patrons prefer not to be helped, to find things on their own, Nicole says. So having our collection in order is vital. A lot of times as librarians we dont have time to do it.
Some just want to help out, like Sage. Others, like the St. Thomas Aquinas School trio of Grace Donahue, Lily Prince and Halle OBrien, come to fill hours for graduation requirements, service clubs or religious ceremonies. Lily came in last month to fill some hours for National Junior Honor Society, and convinced her friends to come along Saturday to help out as well.
I kind of wish we could do it every Saturday, Lily says. So we could have something to do [together] on Saturdays.
