Two of Fairfields high schools will indulge in an annual tradition this weekend the spring musical. Caitlin Bonenfant and Dan Murphy will take the stage as the title characters in Notre Dame High Schools production of Beauty and the Beast. And just down the road, Fairfield Warde High Schools players will star in their own version of Urinetown.
Notre Dames Beauty and the Beast is directed by Maria Verderbeer, who has also helmed productions for North Stratfield Elementary School and many other schools in the past. Their take on the classic fairytale will have a distinctive twist, updating it for the modern era, which fits with Verderbeers style.
Wardes Drama Clubs take on Urinetown sticks closer to the Broadway production, but the story is distinctive on its own. Johnny Shea will star as Bobby Strong, a freedom fighter in a dystopian world where water shortages force all citizens to use public toilets run by Caldwell B. Caldwell (played by Ethan Wise). But Strong falls in love with Caldwells daughter Hope (Lindsey Reuter) while clashing with bathhouse manager Penelope Pennywise (Katie Langham).
Beauty and the Beast starts Friday at 8 p.m. at Sacred Heart Universitys Edgerton Center for the Performing Arts, with two additional shows at 2 and 8 p.m. Saturday. Tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for senior citizens, and $7 for students and children, and are available at the door. Urinetown goes live at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, plus a Sunday matinee at 2 p.m., in the auditorium at Fairfield Warde High School. All tickets are $10 at the door.
