Fairfield Students Display Talents This Weekend

FAIRFIELD, Conn. ? Hey, Fairfield, looking for fun activities with the kids this weekend? Here’s some of the events planned in and around Fairfield over the next three days:

Friday, Feb. 10

7 p.m.: Fairfield’s high school and middle school singers will take the stage at Tomlinson Middle School for “A Cappella Night.” The student groups will sing renditions of current and classic pop hits without backing bands. College groups with Fairfield alumni, Vocal Point from the University of Delaware and the Dynamics from Muhlenberg College, will also perform as special guests. Tickets are $5 each or $10 for a full family.

7 p.m.: Osborn Hill Elementary School students will perform in their annual Variety Show in the auditorium of Roger Ludlowe Middle School. Groups of kids grades 1 to 5 will sing, dance, play instruments, put on skits and even break out pogo sticks for a special show. Tickets are $5 at the door.

Saturday, Feb. 11

10 a.m.: The state’s annual Rube Goldberg contest will take place at the Discovery Museum on the Bridgeport-Fairfield border. Teams of high school students must make machines that take at least 20 steps to pop a simple balloon. The winners will go on to the national competition at Ferris State University in Michigan next month. The field’s already set, but all are welcome to check out the students' designs in action.

10 a.m.: Bird-watching expert Richard Worth will lead a class at the Connecticut Audubon Society’s headquarters at 2325 Burr St. Worth will take parents and kids 10 and up on a hike through the woods surrounding the center, discussing how to identify birds by their markings and other features. The program is free.

1 to 4 p.m.: The Bellarmine Museum of Art at Fairfield University is holding a special “Family Day” for parents and children. Along with their ongoing exhibition of photographer Anthony Riccio’s impressions of Italy, the museum will have special activities and features for children and their caretakers. The gallery is free to visit.

2 p.m.: The Pequot Library’s Music for Youth Series hosts Narek Arutyunian, an award-winning clarinetist. His family-oriented concert is free for all to attend at the library’s auditorium, located at 720 Pequot Ave. in Southport.

Sunday, Feb. 12

2 p.m.: Fairfield Museum and History Center will host a Student Theater Showcase as part of its ongoing exhibit “Bravo! A Century of Theater in Fairfield County.” Improv and theater groups from Greens Farms Academy, New Pond Farm and other local schools will put on a medley of skits and songs. Tickets are $5 for adults and free for children under 10.
