Fairfield Starts Brush, Trash Pickup Monday

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Fairfield will begin curbside pick up of brush and other debris Monday and will continue to do tours around town for weeks.

Fairfield will only pick up flood-damaged pieces in certain areas, but it will gather brush in the entire town starting Nov. 5.

“We have 275 miles of road; I think every foot of those are covered with brush that we’ll be collecting,” said Joseph Michelangelo, Fairfield’s Public Works Director.

Trucks will go to all areas of town starting Nov. 5 to collect brush, tree limbs and other yard waste caused by the storm.  All residents need to do is to place the items at curbside — public works crews will not enter private property for removal. Officials also remind residents to keep debris out of the roads as much as possible.

Public works crews also will go into areas in the flood zone to clean out any garbage that needs to be thrown out because of flood damage. The pick up will cover large, bulky items, such as furniture, appliances and carpeting rendered useless by the storm. Normal household waste still needs to be collected by private contractors as usual. A full list of the streets covered by this pickup is available at the DPW website.

Michelangelo did not say exactly how long the pick ups will last, but he did say crews will make multiple trips through all the neighborhoods the next few weeks.

“Frankly, we’re going to be collecting for weeks,” Michelangelo said. “Don’t feel that it has to be ready Monday.”

The town dump and Greencycle recycling center also will be open extra hours throughout the weekend. Both centers will be open from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
