FAIRFIELD, Conn. Fairfields 12-and-under softball team clinched a berth in the District 2 championship game Friday with a 17-3 victory over Westport at Unity Park in Trumbull.
Fairfield completed the mercy-rule win in four innings. A game in Little League ends after a team builds a lead of 10 or more runs.
Fairfield is 3-0 in pool play with one game remaining in pool play. Black Rock and Trumbull play Sunday for the right to meet Fairfield in the title game. Fairfield has already defeated both teams and plays winless Stratford in its final pool play game on Sunday.
Anna Rasmussen, Maddie Russell and Zoe Holderied scored four runs apiece for Fairfield. Russell had four hits and two RBIs, and pitched three innings before being relieved by Holdereid in the fourth
Kayla Bivens had two RBIs and two runs scored, while Shannon McCartney had a hit, an RBI and scored two runs. Fairfield scored in every inning and led 8-0 before Westport scored two in the second. Fairfield has outscored opponents 38-3 in its three games.
Fairfield won District 2, Section 1, state and New England championships last summer before losing in the semifinals of the Eastern Regional in Bristol. Rasmussen, Mary Rose Finnigan and Brittany Romero are the holdovers from that squad, as is manager Jarry Rasmussen.
