FAIRFIELD, Conn. A promising start to Saturdays game against Darien collapsed under the weight of a stifling full-court press as the Fairfield Tigers sixth-grade boys team fell, 34-27, in a Fairfield County Basketball League game.
Fairfield dropped to 1-4 on the season and 1-5 overall. Max Mulquin scored 14 to lead Fairfield, while John Gmibus and Riley McGreedy added four apiece.
Their press just killed us, Fairfield coach Michael Bourque said. We didnt react well to their pressure.
Fairfield jumped out to a 7-2 lead after the first quarter and led 15-14 at halftime. The Tigers scored three quick points to begin the second half before Darien dialed up its pressure. Dariens defense sparked a 13-0 run that put it ahead 27-18 entering the fourth quarter.
We havent seen too many full-court presses like that, Bourque said. Its something that we have to work on. Its tough to simulate that in practice because Darien is very quick.
Fairfield answered at the start of the fourth quarter with three points to get within 27-21. The Tigers had a chance to trim Dariens lead even further, but couldnt quite get over the hump as Darien held on.
Fairfield returns to the court Jan. 7 for an away game at Weston.
