FAIRFIELD, Conn. Fairfield has already defeated North Branford once in the Section 1 Little League softball tournament. Manager Jarry Rasmussen expects a much harder fight, however, with the championship on the line Wednesday night.
Fairfield plays North Branford for the tournament crown Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Bob Lang Field in Seymour. The winner advances to meet the winner from Section 2 for the state title in a best-of-three series beginning Saturday at Sacred Heart University.
Fairfield beat North Branford, 16-3, on July 6 in their pool play matchup. Everything went right for us in that game, and everything went wrong for them, Rasmussen said. I dont see that happening again. That was North Branfords first game on a grass infield and I think theyll be much tougher tonight. Im expecting another tough game.
Fairfield went undefeated in rolling to the District 2 title and is 4-0 in pool play in Section 1. The defending New England champions have shown a steely resolve in tight games in the sectional, taking a tight 2-0 contest over Darien and a 6-1 decision over Seymour after trailing through four innings. It has been the same thing for three or four years, Rasmussen said. Theyve been through pressure situations. They dont get rattled easily. That big-game experience has been helpful.
North Branford went 3-1 in pool play, including a late comeback to squeak past Darien on Sunday.
