Fairfield Rolls Out an Easter Tradition

It may have been gray and dreary outside, but the scene inside the Pequot Library was bright with spring colors. The Southport library held its annual Easter Egg Roll Saturday, bringing in dozens of Fairfield families. Though it had to be moved inside because of rain, families like the Shantzes had a good time.

“This has been a tradition of ours for the past few years,” said Andrea Shantz, who brought sons Henry and Max along for the morning’s activities. “So we stuck it out through the rain.”

This was the sixth year Pequot has run the Egg Roll the day before Easter. Initially inspired by the White House’s annual egg roll, the event has become a Fairfield tradition in its own right. Last year’s sunny weather drew more than 500 parents and kids to the library’s Great Lawn.

This year’s draw was closer to 100. Christoph of Fairfield, who brought his 4-year-old son, Hugo, and his 2-year-old daughter, Sophie, said they came out because the rain limited his options. “It’s got lots of stuff for the kids,” Christoph said. “And given that the weather was so bad, it’s the best choice in town.”

Families brought hard-boiled eggs and long-handled wooden spoons and each age group had its own race pushing eggs across the library’s floor. Once the kids finished, even some adults gave it a try. Families also got to visit with Bella, the Pequot Library’s resident Easter Bunny.

The favorite part for young Henry Shantz was the very beginning of the morning, when he got to participate in a classic Easter tradition: dying his egg a rainbow of colors. “I like to mix the colors,” Henry said.
