FAIRFIELD, Conn. - Two Fairfield teams enter state tournament play Tuesday with high expectations.
Fairfield Prep is ranked sixth in the Class LL tournament, while Notre Dame of Fairfield is seeded sixth in the Class M tournament.
Notre Dame hosts the Sports and Medical Sciences Academy of Hartford at 6:30 p.m., while Prep hosts Norwalk High at 7 p.m.
Prep (18-2) enters the tournament on one of the most dominant runs in the state. The Jesuits won their last 13 regular season games. Prep fell to Career Magnet of New Haven in the Southern Connecticut Conference semifinals.
The Jesuits have a challenging road ahead if they want to return to the state finals for the second year in a row. Potential opponents along the way include Westhill of Stamford and three unbeaten teams in Hartford Public, Hillhouse and St. Joseph of Trumbull.
Prep is led by William and Mary-bound senior Terry Tarpey.
Notre Dame (16-4) also finished the season on an impressive run, ending with an 11-game winning streak. The Lancers were edged by Immaculate of Danbury in the Southwest Conference championship.
The Lancers reached the state semifinals last year before falling to eventual champion Trinity Catholic. Notre Dame is led by juniors Dan Upchurch and Earl Coleman.
