Fairfield Leaders Deadlock Over Flatto Replacement

Fairfield residents will have to wait at least two more weeks to find out who their interim first selectman will be. Kenneth Flatto’s resignation became effective Wednesday at midnight. Selectman James Walsh (R) and Acting First Selectman Sherri Steeneck (D) could not agree on appointing Democratic nominee Michael Tetreau to the job until November’s elections.

Tetreau, currently a member of the Board of Finance, received the unanimous nomination from the Democratic Town Committee in April. Earlier this week he officially declared his candidacy for the job in November’s elections. But Walsh said Wednesday he would not approve a declared candidate for the position to serve as interim first selectman.

That person “may weigh every decision they make from that moment on against ‘How’s this going to be sold to the electorate in November?’ ” Walsh said.

Steeneck, however, stuck by the party’s decision. She said that having a selectman who wants to keep his job would create more responsibility to the voters.

“If you don’t put somebody in there who’s got to come back and look in the eye of the taxpayers again, then you’re not getting that accountability,” she said.

Flatto, a Democrat, held the office for 12 of the past 14 years. Last month he accepted the position of Executive Director of the state’s Division of Special Revenue. When he stepped down early Wednesday morning, fellow Democrat Steeneck was sworn in to serve during the search for a replacement.

Walsh suggested giving the job to Flatto’s chief of staff, Thomas Bremer. Walsh said that with Bremer’s involvement in town politics as Flatto’s second in command, he should be qualified to do the job. “He could make the transition tomorrow without missing a heartbeat,” Walsh said.

Steeneck pointed out that Bremer was on the committee that nominated Tetreau and made no indication that he wanted the job. She said she would not consider anyone other than her party’s choice. “I know I’m not going to change from [Tetreau],” Steeneck said. “That’s my nominee.”

Walsh and Steeneck will discuss the issue again at their next meeting May 18. If they do not reach an agreement in 30 days, a special vote will take place this summer. All elected Democrats in Fairfield’s government would then make the choice.
