FAIRFIELD, Conn. Fairfield residents Sagar Gulati and Steven Belitzky earned Scoutings highest honor last week. The two members of Fairfields Boys Scouts Troop 10 reached the rank of Eagle Scout.
Eagle Scouts must earn a minimum of 21 merit badges and serve in leadership positions to earn the distinction. Candidates also need to complete a community service project to help local organizations. Only about 5 percent of Scouts go on to earn the honor, according to the Boy Scouts of America.
Gulati decided to help Fairfields Regional Fire Training School with his project. He wove slats through the 200 feet of fence surrounding the property to provide privacy for the trainees. He also created two dummies, and adult and a child, for the schools training exercises.
Belitzky performed his community service at the Seymour I. Hollander Apartments, an affordable-housing complex for senior citizens in Bridgeport. He raised money to pay for the project and then designed and built an outdoor brick patio and garden gazebo for the complexs residents.
The two were promoted in a ceremony Sept. 8. at First Church Presbyterian. First Selectman Michael Tetreau and State Rep. Tony Hwang joined Troop 10 Scoutmaster Dan Cassette in presenting the boys with their medals.
