Fairfield Hockey Shut Down by Trinity, 4-0

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield Co-Op boys ice hockey team has struggled with its consistency all season and the trend continued on Wednesday night. After stunning powerhouse New Canaan last Saturday, Fairfield failed to put a goal on the board against Trinity Catholic, falling 4-0.

“The frustration level was through the roof tonight. We looked like a team that was on game one, not 70 percent through the season,” Fairfield head coach Mark Pettroni said. “We came off a win on Saturday where we looked like a Division I team and could beat anybody in the state. Now we’re back to a low. It’s been like that all season.”

Early penalty trouble doomed Fairfield, as Trinity netted a pair of power play goals late in the first period. Even the Crusaders’ penalty kill unit caused trouble for Fairfield, as Steve Lambrinakos netted a shorthanded goal with less than a minute to play in the first. Fairifeld could not match Trinity’s success on the power play, going 0-for-3 with the extra man.

The early three-goal deficit was too much to overcome with Trinity’s freshman goalie Kyle Odeirno clamping down. Odeirno earned his first career shutout, stopping all 25 of Fairfield’s shots.

“We get two bad penalties and they pop two goals early. It took the wind out of our sails,” Pettroni said. “It just wasn’t our finest moment.”

Fairfield Co-Op (6-8) needs to win two out of its final five games to clinch a state playoff berth. It has a tough road ahead to get those two wins, starting with St. Joseph on Saturday at 8 p.m.
