FAIRFIELD, Conn. Two local charities will get a special Christmas gift this December. The Fairfield Christmas Tree Festival has named the Norma F. Pfriem Breast Care Center and the Cardinal Shehan Center as its beneficiaries for 2012.
The Norma F. Pfriem Breast Care Center is a division of Bridgeport Hospital. It works with schools and community centers to provide breast cancer screenings and treatments for women in the Greater Bridgeport area. Since its founding in 1999 it has helped more than 20,000 women with the disease.
The Cardinal Shehan Center is a community center in downtown Bridgeport. It offers educational, recreational and cultural programs for low-income kids and their families.
The two organizations recently began a joint program where the Pfriem Center will offer free breast cancer screenings at the Cardinal Shehan Center. The money raised from the Fairfield Christmas Tree Festival in December will help fund this program and other work at both organizations.
We are proud to bring these two local organizations together to pool their resources and create a health awareness pilot program to combat breast cancer, said festival president Carol Wheeler in a press release.
The Fairfield Christmas Tree Festival is an annual fundraiser held at Fairfields Burr Homestead. Local interior designers decorate the rooms of the Old Post Road mansion each year for the holiday season. Each year the weekend-long event in early December donates 100 percent of its proceeds to a local charity. For more information, visit the event's website.
