FAIRFIELD, Conn. One driver was hospitalized in a crash at the intersection of Stillson Road and Black Rock Turnpike Monday afternoon. A Fairfield Fire Department engine also was struck while responding to the incident.
The initial crash occurred at about 3 p.m. Monday. A three-car collision at the intersection of Stillson Road and Black Rock Turnpike left one of the drivers unconscious inside his still-running vehicle, officials said. Fairfield Fire crews forced entry into the car and pulled the driver out. He was transported to a local hospital, but left the scene conscious and in stable condition, officials said.
While tending to the initial accident, an additional ladder truck was called to the scene to protect the scene from further traffic. Another car, however, collided with the fire engine during the recovery. No one was inside the fire truck at the time, and the second crash did not result in any injuries, officials said.
"We are often asked why the fire department sends so many apparatus to the scenes of vehicle accidents and I believe the answer is self evident. It is for the tools, personnel and safety of all emergency personnel operating in the road ways, Assistant Fire Chief Scott Bisson said in a press release. "Barrier tape and flashing lights may warn drivers of an accident in the middle of a busy roadway but only 60,000 pounds of steel can stop or deflect a moving car from striking emergency personnel when drivers ignore those warnings.
The Fairfield Police accident investigation unit still is looking into the causes of both crashes. No accident had been filed as of Tuesday morning.
