FAIRFIELD, Conn. Fairfield Police are asking for residents help in finding the intruders who broke into a Fairfield home late Tuesday and robbed an elderly couple at gunpoint.
What were asking for, is that if anyone in the Park Avenue area ... saw something at the time that might have raised someones suspicion, give us a call, Fairfield Police Chief Gary MacNamara said at a Wednesday morning press conference. MacNamara also released more details of the home invasion.
The break-in occurred south of the corner of Brion Drive and Park Avenue at about 10:30 p.m. Tuesday. Three or four men broke into the home of an elderly couple. One of the invaders held the man at gunpoint while the others took an unknown amount of cash and jewelry. The couple, both in their 80s, received minor injuries during a struggle but refused medical attention. Police left them in the care of a relative after beginning their investigation.
The suspects were wearing masks, so the victims were not able to provide a good description. The masks were distinctive Halloween masks, mostly black but with white portions, MacNamara said. Detectives are still trying to get a better description of the items.
The burglars most likely fled the scene immediately after the incident. Police do not have any information on their vehicle, but they ask residents who may have been in the area around the time of the attack to report any suspicious behavior, such as a car driving erratically, or with passengers wearing masks.
This is the first case of a home invasion in Fairfield in about three years, MacNamara said. Homeowners have had run-ins with burglars since then, but those cases were occupied home burglaries, or cases where the burglars expected a house to be empty and accidentally encountered residents. This case, however, seems to be a planned, deliberate entry, knowing full well that theyre home, MacNamara said.
Anytime that somebody enters your residence, and a homeowner finds their residence violated, its traumatic, MacNamara added. But when you are confronted inside your own home, in an area where youre supposed to be safe, it will have lasting traumatic effects.
