FAIRFIELD, Conn. A Bridgeport man has been charged with stalking a woman via Facebook and Twitter, Fairfield Police say. Dawer Gilani, 33, had previously been arrested for visiting the womans Fairfield offices and her home, according to police reports.
The victim first complained to police about Gilani in January 2011. She had spotted his car driving around the parking lot of the Kings Highway office park where she worked at the time. He also went into the offices a month later, asking to see her. At the time he was charged with disorderly conduct and warned to stay away.
Fairfield police charged him with trespassing and stalking in May 2011 after he was again seen driving around the lot of the office building. He was also arrested by police in the town where the woman lives for driving in her neighborhood, violating a protective order she had against him.
The woman contacted Fairfield Police on Jan. 12 to report the latest incidents, which occurred electronically. She told police she received friend requests from an account with the name Ali Umar, but which contained photos of Gilani. She also found a Twitter account with the same name that was following only her and her sister, police say.
Police found that no person in Connecticut with the name Ali Umar had ever appeared on official documents. Through records searches they connected both accounts to Gilani, according to police reports. They applied for an arrest warrant and brought him into custody Monday.
Gilani was charged with 10 counts of violating a protective order and one count of violating conditions of release. He was held on a $250,000 bond and was due in court Tuesday.
