The National Weather Service issued a heat advisory for Peekskill and the rest of Westchester for Tuesday.
The forecast calls for partly sunny skies with a high near 94 degrees. However, the heat index value could make it feel as high as 101 degrees. There is a 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 1 p.m.
Residents are advised to avoid outdoor activities.
Peekskill Police Spokesman Lt. Eric Johansen said the citys cooling center located in the neighborhood center on Nelson Avenue would be open. Residents can check the departments Twitter account for confirmation and updates.
A heat advisory is issued when the combination of heat and humidity is expected to make the weather feel like its between 100 and 104 degrees for at least two hours.
Tuesday night is expected to be partly cloudy, with a low of around 65 degrees.
Temperatures will drop on Wednesday to a high of about 85 degrees and in the evening will drop to a low of around 56 degrees.
Johansen urged residents without air conditioning to take advantage of public places with air conditioning such as shopping centers and libraries and to stay hydrated.
