The incident happened around 6:30 p.m. Saturday, July 18, at Nassau University Medical Center on Hempstead Turnpike, according to Nassau County Police.
Officers were already at the hospital on an unrelated assignment when staff asked for help with an uncooperative patient, police said. Hospital employees and officers informed the patient he had been discharged, but he immediately became aggressive and combative, authorities said.
While officers attempted to handcuff him, the man allegedly swung his arm at them and grabbed onto the top of a desk in an effort to resist arrest before he was subdued, according to police.
Investigators later learned the patient, identified as Emmanuel Okoro, 66, of Hempstead, had become physical with a hospital staff member before officers intervened.
Okoro allegedly grabbed the employee's right wrist and twisted it, causing substantial pain, a bump to the wrist, and mobility issues, police said.
He was charged with second-degree assault and second-degree obstructing governmental administration.
Okoro was scheduled to be arraigned Sunday, July 19, at First District Court in Hempstead, according to Nassau County Police.
