Embezzler Sentenced to 15 Months

A former bookkeeper for a Stamford company was sentenced to 15 months in prison Monday for embezzling nearly $150,000 from the business, according to a press release from the U.S. Department of Justice. Peter C. Yarasavich, 41, of Milford, also faces three years of supervised release–the first six months consisting of home confinement–after serving the prison term. Yarasavich was sentenced in Hartford by U.S. District Judge Robert N. Chatigny. Assistant U.S. Attorney James R. Smart prosecuted the case, which was investigated by the FBI.

As a temporary bookkeeper working at M2 Products, Inc., in Stamford, Yarasavich had access to the business' financial records and prepared financial reports on a regular basis for company managers and an outside accountant. Yarasavich embezzled money from the firm between August 2007 and February 2009, according to the release. He wrote company checks to himself, forging the firm president's signature, and then cashed the checks for his own use.

Yarasavich attempted to cover up the theft by entering false information on financial reports. He stole a total of approximately $149,128, says the release. Chatigny ordered Yarasavich to pay full restitution. Yarasavich pleaded guilty to one count of wire fraud in January of this year.
