Eduardo Hernandez, 49, of Garnerville, was sentenced to 14 years in state prison for second-degree kidnapping in Rockland County Court before Judge Kevin Russo, Rockland County District Attorney Thomas Walsh announced on Wednesday, June 3.
The sentence stems from an attack in the Village of Haverstraw on Sunday, Sept. 14, 2025, at around 5:25 p.m.
Prosecutors said Hernandez attacked a woman outside a home, grabbed her by the neck, held a screwdriver to her throat, and threatened to use deadly force while restraining her.
The woman fought him off and called for help.
Witnesses saw Hernandez flee in a vehicle and gave investigators the license plate number, according to the DA's Office.
The next morning, on Monday, Sept. 15, 2025, investigators found Hernandez's vehicle and tried to stop it in Stony Point at around 9:15 a.m. However, he ran from the vehicle, but was later caught and taken to the Haverstraw Police Department, prosecutors said.
As previously reported by Daily Voice, Hernandez pleaded guilty to second-degree kidnapping in March.
Hernandez had been released from state prison on March 15, 2022, after serving 19 years for three prior felony convictions, prosecutors said.
His criminal history includes a 2004 first-degree rape conviction and multiple kidnapping convictions involving separate women in Rockland County.
In April 2004, Hernandez kidnapped a 52-year-old woman in West Haverstraw by pulling her into a van with a rope around her neck, then sexually assaulted and robbed her, according to prosecutors.
About 30 minutes later, prosecutors said, he attacked a 31-year-old woman in a basement laundry room at the Kensington Circle apartment complex in Haverstraw, where he tried to drag her behind dryers and wrap electrical cords around her neck before she fought him off.
Hernandez was also later linked by DNA to a Dec. 22, 2002, attack at the Marian Shrine in Haverstraw, where a 48-year-old woman was grabbed from behind, had a rope placed around her neck, and was dragged into a wooded area before escaping, prosecutors said.
He pleaded guilty in 2005 to second-degree kidnapping in that case and received an additional prison sentence.
"The danger that this man poses to the community cannot be understated," Walsh said in a statement on Wednesday, adding, "Three prior felony convictions for Rape and Kidnapping should have been enough, but this defendant chose to strike again."
The latest case was investigated by the Haverstraw Police Department with assistance from the Stony Point Police Department and Rockland County Sheriff's Office. It is being prosecuted by Supervising Assistant District Attorney Gerard Damiani III and Senior Assistant District Attorney Kaitlin DeLuca of the Special Victims Unit.
