Flamingos, cows, landscapes and flowers adorn the walls of the Easton Public Library as part of Art in the Country, a regional open juried fine art show.
You can check out the oil paintings, watercolors, mixed media and more at a reception Saturday from 7 to 10 p.m. The event is $25 per person and will be catered with hors d'oeuvres, wine and music. Proceeds from the event aid the library's budget as well as help with the arts in Easton.
Artwork from 45 artists from 16 Connecticut towns and six New York towns was judged Thursday by Nancy P. Gladwell, chair of painting at the Lyme Academy of Fine Art in Old Lyme.
This year's first prize winner is Laura Wilk from Weston for her watercolor painting, Curly Dahlias. It received this award for its "lively composition interacting with the painting's format zestfully" and for its impressive technical skills and color harmonies that develop mood and nuance, said Gladwell.
Second prize was awarded to Richard Capasse of Redding for his oil painting, Pansies. Honorable mention went to Helen Roman of Weston for her oil painting, Figure on Red Cloth. Merit awards were given to Denise Susalka of Redding for Fiesta; Elaine Finsilver of Hartsdale, N.Y., for Still Waters; JoAnn Davidson of Westport for Backyard; and Howard Aaron of Easton for Fresh from the Farm.
The artwork can be seen during regular library hours from May 9 through May 21. This is the sixth year the Easton Arts Council has shown this event in Easton.
