There's still snow on the ground, but Earthplace, Westport's nature discovery center, is thinking ahead to summer. If you are, too, you'll be happy to know that Earthplace opened its summer camp registration Thursday.
At the camp, open for children from preschool through ninth grade, the 62-acre wildlife sanctuary becomes an outdoor classroom. For example, campers take trail walks through the woods and often spot animals. Children not only learn about the creature but also about its habitat. Every week, campers are visited by animals from the center's Animal Hall.
For children from first through fourth grade, weekly field trips are a key part of camp. Children from third grade through seventh grade will learn how to canoe. Older campers grades five through nine also participate in a weeklong camping trip to the Adirondacks in New York.
The camper-to-staff ratio is five-to-one for the 3's program and seven-to-one for the other groups. A nurse is in charge of first aid and collecting camper medical information. Additionally, all group leaders have first aid, CPR, medication and epi-pen training
