Early-Morning Fire Extinguished

An early-morning fire, with “heavy smoke showing from the front of the house,” according to the incident commander, Assistant Chief Steve Curry, was quickly extinguished by Fairfield firefighters Wednesday at 915 South Pine Creek Road. The blaze was believed to be accidental in nature.

Alerted by the activation of a smoke detector in the basement, the two occupants immediately fled the home, firefighters said. The mother and her teenage son were evacuated and relocated to a neighbor’s home.

The Fairfield Emergency Communications Center received the fire report at 3:29 a.m. Engines 1, 2 and 4, Rescue 1, Ladder 2 and Car 3 were dispatched and arrived within minutes. Engine 1 personnel, commanded by Lt. Roger Caisse, attacked the fire, while Rescue 1 searched the house.

Chief Richard Felner and Deputy Chief Art Reid, also on the scene, attributed the quick notification and safe evacuation of the residents to the use and maintenance of smoke detectors. Added Fire Marshal Bill Kessler, who was the last to leave the scene shortly before 6 a.m.: “The operating smoke detectors allowed the occupants to become aware of the fire and escape without injury. Their early notification allowed us to contain the fire to the basement and minimize further damage to the home.”
