Residents should avoid walking through brush and leaf litter, where ticks are commonly found this time of year, and shower upon returning inside from hikes, The Poughkeepsie Journal reported.

Long pants tucked into socks and long-sleeved shirts are recommended, but insect repellents containing DEET and picaridin can keep away ticks when such clothing isn't practical, said The Poughkeepsie Journal.

Clothing treated with permethrin can also repel ticks, and lightly colored clothes can make ticks more visible, The Poughkeepsie Journal reported.

Collars with the insecticide imidacloprid can protect cats and dogs from ticks, said The Poughkeepsie Journal.
