Back-to-back temperature swings will bring drastic changes in conditions over the coming days. Highs on Thursday, April 9, will remain below normal, but warmer air is set to arrive on Friday, April 10, and stick around well into next week, according to the National Weather Service.

Thursday will feel unseasonably cool, with temperatures struggling to climb out of the 40s in many areas. However, a significant warmup will begin Friday, with highs surging into the 60s and 70s across much of the region.

The warmer stretch will last through the weekend and into early next week, but don’t get too comfortable. Another round of cooler air is expected to sweep in by midweek, bringing temperatures back down to below-average levels.

AccuWeather meteorologists warn that the rapid temperature swings could create challenges for outdoor plans, transportation, and logistics. The sharp contrasts between warm and cool air masses may also trigger unsettled weather, including rain and thunderstorms, particularly as the warm air moves in.

The National Weather Service said on Wednesday, April 8, that the Northeast has already experienced dramatic weather shifts this spring, with record highs in the 80s in some spots followed by sudden drops into the 40s. This week’s forecast continues that trend, with temperatures fluctuating by as much as 20-30 degrees in some areas over just a few days.

Residents are advised to stay prepared for changing conditions and check forecasts frequently. The rapid swings in temperature could also lead to slick roads during any rain or storms, especially in areas where temperatures drop quickly overnight.
