MAMARONECK, N.Y. -- The intersection of Route 1 and Fenimore Road will be busier than usual this week as two roadwork projects have relegated traffic to one lane each way between Fenimore Road and Mount Pleasant Avenue.
Con Edison removed all the gas from a nearly 100-year-old gas main, which required two large man holes to be opened on the corners of Fenimore Road and Mount Pleasant Avenue along Route 1.
The low pressure, 12-inch cast iron main serviced three businesses along that stretch, which are now hooked up to a high pressure, 20-inch steel main that runs parallel on Route 1.
On the south-bound corner of Fenimore Road and Route 1, Verde Electric laid blacktop in the three, two-foot strips of road they dug up in late July for a New York State Department of Transportation project.
The project will add new pedestrian cross walks at the three-way intersection, including one to the north-bound side of the intersection, which previously had no crosswalk. They will also replace the overhead traffic lights with three rigid cast arms that will be erected on the edges of the curbs and extend out into the street.
