Highway Patrol units were dispatched to the eastbound lanes near Exit 63 in Holtsville for a report of an overturned vehicle at 9:41 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 26, according to the release.
As DOT personnel responded, Randolph Acum, 47, of Mastic, arrived in a 2024 Chevrolet Silverado and parked behind the overturned vehicle, police said.
While Acum was placing traffic cones in the roadway toward the rear of the vehicle, an eastbound 2018 Toyota Camry struck him and then crashed into the Silverado at 10:33 p.m., authorities said.
Acum was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment of serious injuries, police said.
The Camry was driven by Joseph Kalinowski, 54, of Centereach, according to police. He was taken to the same hospital for treatment of minor injuries and released into police custody. He was charged with Driving While Intoxicated.
Kalinowski was held overnight at the Sixth Precinct and is scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on Friday, Feb. 27, police said.
Both vehicles were impounded. Detectives are asking anyone with information to call the Sixth Squad at 631-854-8652.
