Dog Days Pay Off For Charities

A successful summer event that was all about dogs is helping three animal-worthy causes continue their work. The New Canaan Chamber of Commerce gave $500 checks, the proceeds of the second annual Dog Days held in August, to three organizations Wednesday.

The checks were handed out to Strays and Others, a nonprofit rescue and placement agency for unwanted pets; the Local First Fund, a charitable arm of IB.l.a.s.t., which stands for I Buy Local and Shop in Town; and the New Canaan Police Department K-9 program. Zira, the newest police dog, began work Monday with Officer Mike McFadden.

The recipients met with chamber officials Wednesday at Village Critter Outfitter on Cherry Street.

Shirleen Dubuque, owner of Valley Critter Outfitter and co-chair of New Canaan Dog Days, was pleased to see how the event helped other organizations.

"It's great to be able to give back to great community organizations and nonprofits that give to New Canaan in such a big way," Dubuque said. "It's certainly a start. I hope next year we will be bigger and better. I'm definitely excited."

Elizabeth McCarthy, a chamber member and owner of Aetheria Relaxation Spa, said, "I'm over the moon about this. New Canaan is such a dog-friendly town. They're very valuable members of the family. Why not have an entire day dedicated to them?"

On hand Wednesday were Cynthia Gorey, Carolyn Williams, Claudia Webber, Officer Mike McFadden, Elizabeth McCarthy, Capt. Leon Krolikowski, Shirleen Dubuque and Officer Mary-Ann Kleinschmitt.
