The 2010 Census reveals that the number of minorities is growing in town although Wilton remains predominantly white. The populations of black, Hispanics or Latinos, and Asians are all up more than 65 percent since 2000, the census says.
Since 2000, the black population has grown by just less than 70 percent. The Asian population is now 5 percent of the towns total population after growing by 75 percent since 2000. The Hispanic or Latino population has grown by nearly 100 percent and is now 3 percent of Wiltons population.
The white population has fallen to 92 percent of the town from 95 percent in 2000. In 2000, there were 16,848 white people. In 2010, the number fell slightly to 16,666. But the towns overall population has grown 2.4 percent to 18,062. Wiltons total population in 2000 was 17,633.
The changes in Wilton mirror population changes in Fairfield County and Connecticut. The white population has fallen 2 percent in the county and less than 1 percent in the state. The black population has gone up more than 12 percent in Fairfield County and about 17 percent in Connecticut. The countys Asian population has grown more than 47 percent and about 65 percent in the state. The Hispanic and Latino population has risen by just less than 50 percent in the county and state.
Also, the number of people over 18 years old has gone up in Wilton at a slower rate than the state and county. In Wilton, that population rose by less than 3 percent while it has grown by 5 percent in the county and 7.5 percent in the state.
