Developer Promises Temporary Boatyard for Stamford

STAMFORD, Conn. — Harbor Point announced plans to provide Stamford with a temporary boatyard for the upcoming boating season while it continues remediating the 14-acre property that was formerly Brewer’s Yacht Haven.

John Freeman, vice president of Building and Land Technology, the developer in charge of the Harbor Point project, said the temporary yard will provide all of the same services Brewer’s did, including repairs, painting, gas and a travel lift. His presentation came during Monday’s zoning board meeting at Turn of River Middle School.

Building and Land Technology will put together a formal plan in hopes of setting up an interim plan for April 14, the official start of the boating season, Freeman said. He has been in talks with operators for the boatyard and has been updating the board on the progress every two weeks.

Although no formal public hearing was announced for the boatyard, the Zoning Board held a public comment session after the hearing for the hotel Harbor Point is also proposing.

“I heard nothing last Monday that even came close to that,” Maureen Boylan, of Save Our Boatyard, said of Freeman's plan. She added that her group has collected more than 1,800 signatures opposing the developer's plan to take down the boatyard and will pursue legal action if a plan is not submitted.

Ernest Laug said he wants to see the board demand that Harbor Point start and finish one project before staring another. He said he fears that it will complete the rest of its developments and leave Stamford without a boatyard.

The board will hold a formal public hearing after plans for the temporary yard are submitted.
