Officers were dispatched to a residence on Casta Lane at approximately 7:47 a.m. on a report of a domestic dispute in progress, Police Chief Donald Martin said.
Officers determined that Christopher Negit, a 39-year-old Edgewater man, had barricaded himself in the attic crawl space during their initial investigation, Martin said. Officers requested assistance from the Bergen County Regional SWAT Team, police said. The Bergen County Regional SWAT Team, Bergen County Crisis Negotiators, and the Fort Lee Police Department arrived on scene to assist, the chief said.
At approximately 10:51 a.m., the Bergen County Regional SWAT Team and Bergen County Crisis Negotiators were able to safely take Negit into custody. He was transported to the Bergen County Jail on an outstanding warrant out of the Bergen County Sheriff’s Department, authorities said. No new criminal charges were filed, police said.
Court records show Negit has faced multiple criminal and traffic-related charges in Bergen County in recent years. Aside from motor vehicle violations, Negit was charged in Fort Lee with criminal attempt, specifically for purposely engaging in conduct, and that case was transferred. In Fairview, he was charged with possession or use of drug paraphernalia.
In 2024, Negit was charged in Englewood with criminal attempt and burglary for entering a structure without being armed. Court records show those cases were later disposed. Also in 2024, he was charged in Fort Lee with burglary for entering a structure without being armed in two separate cases, which were later disposed, according to court records.
“Edgewater Police Chief Donal Martin would like to extend his gratitude to the Bergen County Regional SWAT team, Bergen County Crisis Negotiators, and the Fort Lee Police Department Emergency Services Unit for their assistance,” the release said.
