Delta Jet Engine Explodes After Takeoff: Video

A Delta Air Lines flight bound for Atlanta experienced a terrifying engine explosion shortly after takeoff from Brazil.

Delta Flight 104, an Airbus A330-323, was climbing out of São Paulo's Guarulhos International Airport early Monday, March 30, when its left engine erupted in flames and began spewing debris.

Video footage of the incident shows flames pouring from the A330’s engine, with pieces of debris raining down as the plane ascended. The quick actions of the flight crew ensured a safe outcome despite the dangerous situation, according to a news report on the explosion on "Se Liga, Brasil," a Brazilian morning news show on the television network SBT that can be viewed here.

Witnesses captured dramatic video footage of multiple explosions, with burning debris falling to the ground and sparking a grass fire near the runway. Separate videos posted on social media are available to view in this report from View From The Wing.

The pilot declared a Mayday and executed a successful emergency landing back at Guarulhos just nine minutes after departure.

“All passengers and crew members are safe with no injuries reported,” Delta Air Lines said in a statement following the incident.

The cause of the engine explosion remains under investigation.

This incident is the latest in a series of engine-related emergencies involving Delta Air Lines aircraft in recent months.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and Brazilian aviation authorities are working together to investigate the cause of the explosion.
