Dead Python Found on Norwalk Street

NORWALK, Conn. – A 6-foot-long boa constrictor wasn't exactly in its natural environment when Norwalk Police found it dead on New Canaan Avenue on Monday morning.

The snake was dehydrated, according to Lydia Rivera, who was called to the scene by her fiance, Eric Davis. Davis usually handles reptiles for Animal Control, but he was working and called Rivera. He told her police were waiting for her. "I said, 'What for, what did I do?'" she said.

She said she felt badly for the snake, which died at New Canaan Avenue and Birchside Drive. "The poor snake looks like he was a pet because he his skin was very nice," she said. "Either the owner let him go because he couldn't take care of it, or it escaped and couldn't survive in this heat. They're very nice snakes."

Rivera thought it was a python, but Animal Control Officer Rick Duddie said it was a boa constrictor and gave its length as 6 feet, according to Sgt. Lisa Cotto. Rivera estimated the snake was worth $250 to $300.
