DARIEN, Conn. Four Boy Scouts in Darien have achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. Elliot Helgans, Charles Stout, Alexander von Stuelpnagel and Holden Chung reached the highest position in scouting through demonstrated leadership, a minimum of 21 merit badges and the completion of a project that benefits another organization.
Helgans worked with the Darien Y and his scouting friends to design and construct four new boat racks, all of which were severely tested by Hurricane Irene but sustained no damage. Stout and a large group of volunteers built two substantial bridges and conducted trail maintenance for the Darien Nature Center.
Von Stuelpnagel helped re-establish the trail at Baker Woods, which had been lost over the years to overgrowth and neglect. He and a group of scouts and parents also built a bridge and field stone crossing. Chung and a group of volunteers replaced nearly 600 feet of old wood rail fence around Royle Elementary School to keep students and athletes safe from traffic.
All four young men supported each other in their individual efforts. They felt an added sense of accomplishment during the project at Royle, where the four friends started out together in kindergarten.
