Darien High School's softball team has been making steady improvement over the past few years. Now, the Blue Wave are one game away from becoming Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference champions.
The Blue Wave earned their first FCIAC title appearance Thursday with a 6-0 win over Stamford in the semifinals at Fairfield University. Second-seeded Darien (19-3) will meet Fairfield Ludlowe in Friday's championship game at 4 p.m. at Fairfield University.
Jess DeMaio tossed a five-hitter and struck out four against one of the league's best hitting teams. Olivia Gozdz and Nicole Buch had three hits apiece for Darien, while Courtney Bell and Emma Hamilton each had two. Darien's defense was also solid, as Emily Moscotello made several nice catches in left field. Hamilton and Buch also excelled defensively.
Darien scored two in the first on a fielder's choice by Brittany Oborn and an error. Darien added a run in the fifth and put the game away with three in the sixth against the sixth-seeded Black Knights.
