DARIEN, Conn. ? A program that tries to build understanding between Darien police officers and town young people has received a $10,000 state grant to fund its activities. Started last year, "Cops and Kids Adventure" is sponsored by the Police Department and the town's youth center, the Depot.
It consists of several Darien police officers working with approximately 20 kids ages 11 to 17. Together they collaborate on several adventures, a community outreach project and an awards dinner. The activities are funded by the grant and focus on team building, leadership skills and instilling confidence, trust and reliance among peers.
The program allows the officers and kids to bond and enables officers to interact with kids outside their roles as police officers. It also help officers see the kids as kids and the kids to see the officers as people with families, interests and hobbies.
Applications for the program can be found on both the Depot and police department websites. Forms should be returned to the Depot, P.O. Box 2381, Darien, CT 06820, or faxed to 203-662-5368. The deadline to apply is Sept. 10.
