"It's a wonderful idea. But, as a middle school teacher in Fairfield County, my school had the SRO (school resource officer for those of you unfamiliar with the term) removed because of budget cutbacks in both P.D. and the Board of Ed. Unfortunately, it probably isn't financially feasible," wrote Jen Fox Murphy.
Darien High School has an SRO, Officer James Palmieri. His position was created to improve the relationship between high school students and the police department, rather than for security concerns. The position costs the town about $15,000.
Amy Raskopf responded, "Yes. And if every family with a school-age kid chipped in $500 this might be feasible."
"Absolutely not. That's not the answer and neither is police in shopping malls, movie theaters or colleges," wrote Karen Muccioli Brewer. She went to write that we as a culture revere violence, something that needs to change.
"Not in the budget," wrote Alison Collins Wright. "Propose raising property taxes in Darien to cover the cost and you will be vilified by anyone on a fixed income or with no kids in the school system. So much for building a 'community.' Depressing reality."
"Even if the money was available, I wouldn't support it. It is not a solution. We need a cure for this disease not a band aid " said Douglas Reid.
"No, but I certainly understand the impulse," said John Towers.
