Darien Engagement Ring Swapped With Fake

A woman living on Bailey Avenue in Darien put on her engagement ring Thursday and discovered that the diamond had been switched with a fake. Police said the ring had originally held a pear-shaped, 2.1-karat diamond on a platinum setting. But somebody had switched it with a smaller marquis cut, which is believed to be made of cubic zirconia.

The woman said she had last seen the original diamond on the ring May 2, when somebody admired it. The ring was stored in a silver Tiffany jewelry box, which also contained other valuable jewelry that was not touched. There was no sign of forced entry in the house, and police said the case remained under investigation.

• Gamil Aziz, 22, was arrested Friday night on a possession of marijuana charge after a routine traffic stop. An officer noticed that Aziz's gray Volkswagen had an illegal front window tint and stopped him in the parking lot of Post 53. The officer said Aziz appeared nervous and noticeably shaken.

Upon being told that Darien police's drug-sniffing dog Zulu would conduct a free air sniff of his car, Aziz admitted he had three small bags of marijuana in his pocket. Zulu also found some residue in the center console of the car. Aziz was arrested and released on a promise to appear in court May 20.
