DARIEN, Conn. After weeks of guessing who would go up against the Republicans in this November's elections, the Darien Democratic Town Committee selected its nominees Tuesday night. Local businessman John Lundeen will be the candidate for first selectman, with current Selectman David Bayne and Planning and Zoning commissioner Vickie Riccardo also running for seats on the board.
The Democrats also nominated Heather Shea for another term on the Board of Education and Gwen Mogenson for another term on the Board of Finance. Kevin Cunnigham, who serves as chairman of the Advisory Board of Health, was selected to take Riccardo's place on the Planning and Zoning Commission.
David Morgan and William Slinsky were nominated to each serve another term as constables. Current Selectman Callie Sullivan declined to run again after serving two terms on the Board of Selectmen. As she announced her decision to step away from Darien politics, at least for a while, Sullivan highlighted some problems the Democrats have faced while being the minority party. "The majority of the Board of Selectman has made little effort to answer important questions, compromise or give credence or attention to concerns."
Bayne promised that, if elected, a Democratic majority on the board would be more open with the public and with other elected officials. "We will be prepared to put all the facts on the table and will listen to and assess all opinions and points of view when making a decision."
Although Lundeen has lived in Darien for more than 25 years, he is a newcomer to the political scene. He has been actively involved in the Darien Chamber of Commerce, as well as various community organizations.
Riccardo has served on the Planning and Zoning Commission since 2009. Before that, she was the chairwoman of the Darien Charter Revision Commission and was a member of the RTM for seven years.
