DARIEN, Conn. Visitors to the Goose in Darien got a special surprise Wednesday evening when Darien Police Officers took over serving duties. Officers manned the bar and took food orders for "Tip a Cop" to benefit the Special Olympics.
"It's a great cause," said Chief Duane Lovello. "This isn't the first time we've done it. The Special Olympics are near and dear to our heart, and we're happy to do it. It's a lot of fun. People really support us, and they get to see cops not in their typical role."
Tables were given a special envelope at the end of the meal in which to place tips, 100 percent of which went directly to the Special Olympics. In addition, 10 percent of all net sales were donated.
There was also a silent auction featuring prizes such as cooking classes, wine baskets, hockey tickets and the chance for a police cruiser and motorcycle to show up at your home. All proceeds from the auction also went to the Special Olympics.
