Darien High School athletic director John Keleher read a letter of apology from the team's football captains apologizing for acts of vandalism at New Canaan High blamed on five Darien players.
"Our captains wanted to read the letter on Wednesday,'' Darien coach Rob Trifone said. "I said, 'Let's do it before the game.' I talked it over with (New Canaan coach) Lou (Marinelli), and we decided that's the best way to handle it. What happened Tuesday night is not representative of what this game and this rivalry is all about."
There were no incidents during the game Thursday among its standing-room-only crowd at Darien.
Five Darien players were suspended from the team. Trifone said the suspensions, which included two starters, had little impact on the game for Darien, which fell to New Canaan, 42-14, in its first loss of the season.
