DARIEN,Conn. -- The Darien 7 Blue football team pulled-out a hard-fought win over a stubborn Fairfield Red team, 21-20, in a Fairfield County Football League game.
Brian Peters hit Joe Hardison with a 70-yard touchdown pass late in the fourth quarter and the pair hooked up for the game-winning extra point to give Darien the win.
Darien scored on its opening drive on a touchdown run by Tim Herget. The offensive line of Carl Hunter, Brian Keating, Andrew Tomasello, Jacob Navarro, Kevin Fitzmaurice, Stefan Schneider, Quinn Fay, John Stevenson, Jake Bieler and Charlie Wright opened massive holes throughout the drive. Backs Riley Stewart, Herget, Ben Wilson and Hardis took advantage to move swiftly down the field.
Fairfield responded by breaking a long run off-tackle to score, but Darien stuffed the conversion. Darien responded on its next drive, with Peters hitting Hardison on a 15-yard touchdown pass. The conversion gave Darien a 14-6 lead.
Another long run by Fairfield made it 14-12. Darien defense, led by Joe Strada on the defensive line with Ethan Ehlers, Wilson and Peters at linebacker, stopped Fairfield's extra point attempt.
Darien sprung Riley Stewart on a long touchdown run only to have it called back for illegal procedure, and Darien was forced to punt to Fairfield. Fairfield then marched 56 yards for a 4th quarter score to go up 18-14 and then converted on a two-point conversion to take a 20-14 lead with time dwindling.
Darien started its final drive on its on 30-yard line, with Ryan Finn and Ryan Corcoran providing critical blocking on the left side of the offensive line, but two running plays netted zero yards setting up a critical third-down and long attempt. Behind the blocking of Bieler, Keating and Company, Peters found Hardison. The fleet Darien receiver outran Fairfields pursuing defenders to the end zone to tie the game. He then caught the game-winning conversion.
